Risk and Issue Management – Knowledge Nugget

If you want a free knowledge nugget to find out about Risk Management, then this interview is for you.

In this interview Rod Sowden (the Aspire Europe MD) not only explains the MSP® perspective on risk, but also explores the key area of risk aggregation which is key in a programme environment. Without effective risk aggregation management the programme will always be exposed to risks that appear minor at a project level representing a major threat to the programme.

Programme Management Knowledge Nugget

“Project management is like juggling three balls – time, cost and quality. Programme management is like a troupe of circus performers standing in a circle, each juggling three balls and swapping balls from time to time.” – G. Reiss

  • Aspire Europe research and P3M3® assessments show that the majority of organisations are still at level 1 maturity, which means delivery will be characterised as ad-hoc, heroic or chaotic, depending on which programme you look at
  • In terms of qualifications,  the most popular course is still PRINCE2®  with a staggering 69% of UK project management practitioners holding this accreditation, Managing Successful Programmes (MSP®) comes in second with 24.4% (these statistics are taken from the Arras People Project Management Training Report 2014)
  • When it comes to programme management we know our stuff – Aspire Europe provided  the lead author for the 2007 and 2011 edition of Managing Successful Programmes and we have recently released another book entitled “MSP® Survival Guide for Business Change Manager”.

If you are interested in finding out what programme management is, then we have two useful references below.

The Lazy Project Manager and the Best of British

One of our partners Donnie MacNicol, recently contributed to the Lazy PM Best of British pod casts, here is what he had to say about it:

I recently had the pleasure attending the PMI Congress in London. As part of this, the laziest person in the project management world, Peter Taylor, somehow found the time to interview 10 ‘Best of British’ project management experts. Not that lazy then!

I gave my views on the profession, discussing “programmification” and capbility development, before describing the work I am doing with Aspire Europe on the setting up of Academies for organisations. I describe the key elements of a successful Academy and insights we have gained from the research and development work we have done with organisations.

I am on the 2nd podcast between the wonderful Lindsay Scott and Sheilina Somani, from 20:50 to 40:20. The podcast starts with a certain Clash song, I wonder if you guess which one?

Improve your Benefits Management performance!

FACT: KPMG in 2006 analysed that 80% of benefits defined in business cases never get delivered.

FACT: Aspire Europe’s research into organisational maturity levels has supported this, with 90% of organisations being at Level 1 maturity, which means benefits delivery will be ad-hoc or heroic.

Times are changing and organisations are demanding better benefits delivery and higher levels of competency from staff.

This is the ultimate benefits management i-learning course that pulls together all the key concepts into one place and builds in practical examples, podcasts and plenty of interactive exercises.
